“Valentine’s Day” got off to a healthy start on its namesake weekend, leading the box-office take on Friday (Feb. 12).

The star-packed romantic comedy rang up a studio-estimated $14.6 million on Friday, starting off the long weekend — Monday is Presidents Day — in first place. That’s a little better than forecasters had predicted and puts the movie in line to make $50 million-plus over the four-day weekend. If it does, that would put it past “50 First Dates” as the No. 1 Valentine’s weekend rom-com of all time.

The weekend’s other big releases, “The Wolfman” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” also did fairly well on Friday. Despite poor reviews (the same could be said for “Valentine’s Day”), “The Wolfman” took in an estimated $9.8 million to finish just ahead of “Percy Jackson’s” $9.7 million.

“Avatar,” which was finally knocked out of the top box-office spot last weekend, raked in $4.5 million on Friday to put it ahead of the movie that dethroned it, “Dear John” ($4.1 million).

Love was in the air on Monday night outside Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Or maybe it was just the intoxicating mix of smog and car exhaust on Hollywood Boulevard. Whatever the case, many of the stars of “Valentine’s Day” who walked the red carpet at the film’s premiere — from Julia Roberts to Jessica Alba to Taylor Lautner — had a lot to say on the topic of love’s most prominent day on the calendar.

“My best Valentine’s Day, I took my friend, both of us were single, and said, ‘Screw it, we’re going to go have a romantic weekend,’ ” Jennifer Garner told MTV News. “We went to the wine country, we stayed in romantic bed and breakfasts and we had wine tastings and great meals and massages. We were surrounded by couples in love and we did not care.”

Bradley Cooper is dating Renée Zellweger, but he shared a Valentine’s Day memory from his past. “I was away with a young lady and we came back and I had redone her garden in the back of her house,” he said.

Jessica Biel, herself one half of a celebrity powerhouse couple (along with beau Justin Timberlake), confessed that she doesn’t have any specific plans for February 14. “I have to get my act together,” she said. “I’m doing a last-minute crunch-time plan.”

While most stars were happy to disclose their fond memories of past V-Days, Topher Grace admitted he didn’t have any to share. “I don’t think I have one,” he said. “I’ve been riddled with bad Valentines!”

He added hopefully, “But finally someone created a save. Say you’re in your 20s, you’ve been dating for two weeks, one week. You don’t know what to give. Do I give her a candle or a rose or a dozen roses? Go see a romantic comedy. I’m not going to say which one. Your choice.”

Surely he and his castmates would be pleased if you chose “Valentine’s Day,” which opens on February 12. Garner, too, said the film would make an ideal activity for the big day.

“Girls should go together,” she said. “If you don’t have a boyfriend, just grab your girlfriends and go.”

Aww, how sweet. Bradley Cooper is ditching his significant other to spend Valentine’s day with the most important woman in his life. Yeah, the one that GAVE him life.

Valentine’s Day usually means an expensive dinner, flowers and a romantic getaway (if we’re lucky!) — but not so for Bradley Cooper. The charming actor isn’t planning on spending the special day with his reported significant other, Renee Zellweger — he’d rather be with his mother.

“My mother is coming in tomorrow and we are going to have a nice Valentine’s Day, which is Sunday,” Bradley, 35, told Hollyscoop at the Valentine’s Day movie premiere Feb. 8 at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Is his reported girlfriend of nearly a year, actress Renee Zellweger, 40, going to join the mother/son duo? Nope! “That’s it,” Bradley said, adding that he’s “very excited.”

What a mama’s boy! If you were Renee, do you think you’d find it super sweet if your BF was spending Valentine’s Day with his mom or would you feel ditched on the most romantic day of the year?

While Sony and Lionsgate fight a bidding war for the rights to the “Terminator” franchise, “Terminator Salvation” director McG is looking for his next movie in lieu of not going on to helm the series’ fifth installment. Though he’s still linked to the Broadway musical adaptation “Spring Awakening,” according to Variety he has also been in talks to helm a “priority project” for Fox titled “This Means War.”

The comedy already has two stars in place, Bradley Cooper and Reese Witherspoon. It is expected to begin shooting this spring, which would make it the director’s next movie, rather than the musical. The screenplay for “This Means War” has reportedly been rewritten so many times that it’s difficult to say who the author is anymore, but the most recent draft is by “Role Models” scribe Timothy Dowling (who interestingly enough acted in a “Terminator” movie — the third one).

The plot sounds very “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” yet in “This Means War” the spies who turn on each other are best friends rather than husband and wife. It’s that classic story of a woman coming between two guys and ruining their friendship. Or, can I please, please presume that Witherspoon is one of the friends, not the object of affection for two men?

That would be a bold twist that Fox likely wouldn’t explore. Too “Being John Malkovich,” not enough “There’s Something About Mary” or “Feeling Minnesota” (all these films star Cameron Diaz, coincidentally). Of course, the Hollywood ending would probably cop out and suppress the lesbianism aspect by having Cooper and Witherspoon’s spy buddies make up, make out and fall in love with each other. Probably because that dream woman (cast Diaz!) turns out to be a bad guy or something.

Whatever the case, if McG is on board, I’m still looking forward to this. I’m one of the few people not embarrassed to say I like both “Charlie’s Angels” movies and really enjoyed the director’s “Terminator” sequel and ideas for continuing the series. I could definitely see him doing something fun along the lines of the “Charlie’s” movies combined with “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

I also urge all McG haters out there to watch the director in the FunnyOrDie video where he’s directing Rachel Bilson in a sex scene for a fake film called “Hearts of Palm.” Hilarious and disturbing.

Can you see McG’s talents benefiting “This Means War” or would you prefer another director be hired? Would you rather the filmmaker do more action comedies or be allowed to continue the “Terminator” franchise?
