Bradley talks about working again with director David O. Russell and hashing out scenes with Amy Adams and Louis C.K. in ‘American Hustle.’

LATIMES.COM – This time last year, while Bradley Cooper was making the rounds for his Oscar-nominated lead actor turn in David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” he was also getting ready to get back in the ring with Russell for “American Hustle.” The day after the Oscars, Cooper flew to Boston to begin work on the con artist comedy, in which he plays a live-wire FBI agent trying to make a name for himself with the Abscam sting operation. In a video interview, he spoke to The Envelope about his Oscar-nominated supporting role. Here are excerpts from the conversation.

How did your character evolve from when Russell started writing the script to where he ended up?

It had quite a journey. I’d say that the character in the Eric Singer scripts through to the Richie DiMaso that’s on the film couldn’t be more different. The main thing we wanted to do was create an antagonist who was, hopefully, going to be as colorful or be in the same world of interesting as the Irving Rosenfeld or Edith Greensly or Rosalyn characters. You know, to make him not so much of a guy that you may have seen in other movies.

One of the things we started with was making me a bit unrecognizable so there would be no connection made, and we came up with the curly hair, and that was sort of a window in. Just finding little windows, the sort of habits that he would have, helped align us. And then through that, the Louis C.K. character became very clear as his counterpoint. What we discovered was this sort of petulant child that Richie DiMaso is, this sort of guy who just desperately wants to hang out with the cool kids and also sort of wants to be a man. So he changes the way he looks — he wants to take down white-collar crime because that sort of world oppressed his family growing up, but he’s not really at all equipped emotionally to deal with any of it.

Right, when you see him at home, he’s holed up in the bathroom of the apartment he’s sharing with his mother and he’s eating a chicken wing. It’s not what you would call a traditional FBI agent, is it?

That’s right. He’s trying to get a little distance, he’s suffocated in this house, so the only salvation he has is sitting on the toilet, listening to the baseball game, eating a chicken wing — a chicken leg. And you’re like, “Oh, man, how does that guy show up to work and basically talk to his superior officer and try to convince him into opening a new department of the FBI?”

How did you get that tightly curled hair?

We tried a lot of wigs, and I just looked like somebody from the Three Stooges. And then we curled the hair one day [with curlers] because, to perm it, it would’ve been a bit permanent if it didn’t work. So we put 110 curlers in, and then I sat underneath a heat lamp for 45 minutes on each side, and then it was moved. The whole thing was three hours. And we sort of loved what it did, and we thought, “Let’s not mess with it, let’s just do that,” but not really thinking that, “Oh, that means I’ll have to do it every single day.”

Though a 30-second “Guardians” spot was widely reported, Marvel and Disney have a plan to roll out the characters “in the biggest and best way possible”

THEWRAP.COM – Marvel fans hoping to get a first glimpse of this summer’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie during the Super Bowl are going to be pretty krutacking disappointed in this news: It’s not happening.

Though “Guardians” was widely reported (not on TheWrap, for the record) as one of a handful of films that would get a 30-second spot during the game, director James Gunn threw cold water on fans of the once-obscure comicbook series that Marvel and Disney hope will expand its cinematic superhero universe into the cosmos.

Gunn first made the annoucement via Twitter …

… then followed up with a more detailed explanation on Facebook:

Although I announced it on Twitter, I’m still getting questions about it on FB, so I thought I’d share here as well – the news reports of there being a Guardians of the Galaxy Super Bowl spot are incorrect. So if you’re a fan planning on sitting through hours of football only to get your #GotG fix – don’t! I know many of you are dying for a glimpse into the universe we’re creating – believe me, I hear you loud and clear hundreds of times a day, and I am dying even more to share it with you – IT’S KILLING ME THAT I CAN’T SHOW YOU A GLIMPSE – but Marvel and Disney have had a plan in place for a long time for the rollout of these characters in the biggest and best way possible, serving the widest audience as possible. Trust that they know what they’re doing, as they’ve been through this a few times before. And please be patient. Your enthusiasm, as always, is more than appreciated.

So much for the old adage that movie stars head to Broadway to revive their flagging film careers – or to announce that they are available to appear on television.

No less than Bradley Cooper, currently Oscar nominated for his role in American Hustle, is bound for the Great White Way, in a revival of Bernard Pomerance’s 1979 Tony-winning best drama, The Elephant Man, reports Entertainment Weekly.

The show is due to open in the fall. Further details and other casting news have yet to be announced.

Actor Philip Anglim was nominated for a Tony for his performance in the original Broadway production, and John Hurt was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar when he played the role in David Lynch’s 1980 film, which was not based on the play. (The movie was also nominated for Best Picture.)

The most recent Broadway revival was a 2002 production with Billy Crudup and Kate Burton, who were both nominated for Tonys.

The story concerns the real-life John Merrick, a severely disfigured 19th- century Englishman who struggles to live with dignity.

Cooper, 39, played the role to excellent reviews in a summer 2012 limited run at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts.

“For anyone who has any doubts, Mr. Cooper is not just a movie star, he’s an actor,” said critic Jeffrey Borak of the Berkshire Eagle.

Cooper’s last appearance on Broadway was in 2006, alongside Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd in the Richard Greenberg drama Three Days of Rain.

Earlier this week it was reported that Hugh Jackman and Daniel Radcliffe are also both returning to Broadway.

When Cooper appeared in the Williamstown production, PEOPLE.com readers were polled on whether or not they liked his on-stage look – which had him smooth-chested.

Overwhelming, readers told him to drop the razor. His hairy chest took it by a landslide, 94%.
